OUR FAMILY

We met while in college and married at the age of 20. Dave grew up in Green Bay, WI and Alissa in Cedarburg, WI.

Dave worked as a Communications Manager for MPI in Grafton, WI for 7 years prior to answering the full-time calling to serve with Living Hope International.

Alissa worked as the Office Manager for our church, Word of Grace, for several years, before cutting back to freelance design work while trying to prepare the family and home for the adventure that lay ahead.

Sierra and Kaley attend Warriner Middle School. They enjoy the self-paced nature of the online curriculum with access to advisors for testing and help when needed.

OUR STORY

Alissa and I were both blessed to grow up knowing Christ and His plan of salvation and his love for the lost. Granted we all have moments of feeling lowly ourselves, but lately our eyes have certainly been opened to greater need, unlike what we witnessed growing up in Wisconsin.

We met in college and were married a year and a half later. At 20 we were young by some standards, but ready for the adventure of starting a family –and it has been an adventure. Just out of college with Sierra in diapers and Kaley soon to come, we moved to Orlando, Florida to begin our missions story. It was there while working at the US headquarters of Wycliffe Bible Translators that we learned first hand what it was to be a part of God’s work full-time. We forged friendships with veteran missionaries whose faith and stories were epic. We also met young people like ourselves that have now gone to the far corners of the world themselves. China, Papua New Guinea, Germany, South Africa –even Iowa.

We moved back to Wisconsin where we have fallen in love with great friends, church family and so many others. Still hungry to contribute to God’s work, we approached our pastor at the time, Kirby Andersen, about how we might play a role in cultivating a stronger missions culture at Word of Grace. Pastor Kirby put us in touch with a couple that has changed our lives. Chip and Patti Holmes, of Living Hope International, encouraged us to take the step of leading a short-term mission team to Puebla, Mexico –and we did in the summer of 2009. While at the Esperanza Viva Youth Home our team worked hard and played with 100 kids, who cemented in our minds, Christ’s love for the lowly, and the opportunity for us to be His partner in showing that love.

As the years have passed, we’ve continued taking teams of people to Esperanza Viva. For some, this trip has become an annual spiritual retreat of refreshing, for others it has been a “come to Jesus”  trip, yet others it was a chance to put boots and gloves on their faith –to apply glitter and magic marker to the Gospel. Of the more than 75 people we’ve had the privilege to lead on these trips, none have come back unchanged. Some to live their life with greater purpose, some to see the material world around them with a renewed sense of responsibility. Others have used their experience to muster the courage to share Christ with family and friends, some have sponsored children and staff to ensure the work in Puebla continues.

We too have been impacted. In what ways? All of the above. Beyond that, we’ve had a strong feeling of being “home” while at Esperanza Viva and a growing discomfort when away from all that is happening there. We have truly sought the Lord’s guidance as we’ve contemplated this move to Mexico and His affirmation continues to be evident through His word, opened doors, overwhelming peace and encouragement from so many friends and family.

As we look back, we truly marvel at the way in which God has been paving the way for such a time as this. From Sierra and Kaley’s dual language schooling, to our vocations refining our talents and gifts in preparation for the work ahead, we feel as ready as ever, but at the same time humble and anxious, to be used by God to make a powerful impact in the lives of hurting children.

LIVING HOPE INTERNATIONAL

Living Hope International's mission is to provide for the emotional, physical, educational and social needs of at-risk children, youth, and families, as well as to equip, support, and send leaders to provide similar services throughout the world. To accomplish these goals, LHI receives financial and service support from individuals, churches, businesses and foundations throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and other parts of the world.

LHI has a hands-on, cost-effective work focus. We are directly involved in the work of the missions we support, making the most of available resources.

Esperanza Viva Youth Homes rescue, train, nurture, and rehabilitate under-privileged, orphaned, abandoned and street children whose families are unable or unwilling to provide for them.  Since 1994, Esperanza Viva (EV) in Puebla, Mexico has helped provide full-time care for over 350 children.  In 2006, EV opened a second home in Matamoros, MX just across the border from Brownsville, TX.  Currently, EV has about 125 children in their full-time care.

Integral Education Center, a K-12 school, was born from the need to educate and prepare the children of Esperanza Viva for a successful future, in a country where many young people do not even finish junior high.  Many of our students had rarely, or never, attended classes before entering EV, and now have the opportunity for an education that challenges their minds and expands their horizons.

Nations Church began in 2003 with a desire to impact the city of Puebla, MX and other nations with the radical love of God and to see people mature in an intimate relationship with Him.  A major part of the vision is to minister to the children and youth of Esperanza Viva and to the community of Puebla, and to train them up as leaders through Sunday School, youth programs, conferences and more.  Nations, with a strong calling in missions, also provides legal and spiritual covering for our international missionaries, missions in remote villages, and other short-term mission trips to developing countries.

La Viña Ministry Training Center is an equipping program that consists of a five-month intensive course focused on raising up leaders to reach the world with the Gospel.  An important part of the students' service time is spent directly with the children of Esperanza Viva helping with their daily care and development. We have had more than 400 young adults through this program and many have moved on to full-time ministry, working alongside us at Esperanza Viva or other ministries around the world.
